Of those that served, there is a very special bond that transcends branch of service. Even among military spouses and dependents, the servicemember's life and the struggles that a family endures strengthens bonds between veterans regardless of race, religion or gender.
Housing for active-duty military servicemembers has always been a struggle for both a military installation and its servicemembers. Often, the waiting list at some posts for on-base housing stretches from months to years, depending on the location.
Last year, I reported on an Afghanistan veteran in Michigan named Robert Bowyer. He was restoring a Vietnam-era PBR (Patrol Boat, River) through his nonprofit Operation Black Sheep: The John McClurg Foundation for Vietnam Veterans.
